Summary

Project “Child injuries of respiratory and digestive tracts caused by chemical agents” was conducted since 1. 1. 2006 till 31. 10. 2008. Analysis of cleaning and disinfectant agents was performed as an integral part of this research. This project was fully supported by the Grant Agency of Faculty of Health and Social Studies of the University of South Bohemia.

New cleaning agents, e.g. dishwasher detergent tablets, have appeared in recent years. Unfortunately, these agents represent a new source of dangerous chemicals which can cause injuries. Common household cleaning agents (drain cleaners, dishwasher detergent tablets, etc.) can cause heavy chemical burns of mucous membranes. Unfortunately, containers of such products very often attract children’s attention. Manufacturers try to catch the attention of potential consumers by using bright colors for containers (yellow, blue, purple, pink). Many products lack child-proof caps. Together with improper storage this can lead to injuries with lasting disabilities.
