Summary

The use of methanol is a less common form of intoxication, which can lead to serious metabolic problems, blindness, permanent neurological damage and death. While methanol in itself can be harmless, it is transformed into a highly toxic formic acid by the organism after ingestion. The methanol toxicity corresponds linearly to the degree of metabolic acidosis. The increase of concentration of formic acid is primarily related to the growth of the risk for eye and nerve damage. For protection against permanent damage, acidosis can be corrected by antidote cure or, in case of more serious intoxications, by haemodialysis. With regard to the availability of antidote cure, it is important to recognize the methanol intoxication in time. Most cases of intoxication are caused by ingestion. There are also records of intoxication by inhalation or absorption through skin on the workplace. The lethal oral dosis for human is 30 to 200 ml.

Souhrn

Požití methanolu je méně běžná forma otravy, která může vést k vážným metabolickým potížím, slepotě, trvalému neurologickému poškození a k smrti. Zatímco methanol samotný může být neškodný, po požití je organismem transformován do vysoce toxické kyseliny mravenčí. Toxicita methanolu lineárně odpovídá stupni metabolické acidózy. Nárůst koncentrace kyseliny mravenčí je primárně spojen s nárůstem rizika pro oční a neurologické poškození. Na ochranu před trvalým poškozením je možné acidózu korigovat antidotní léčbou nebo při vážnějších otravách hemodialýzou. Vzhledem k dostupnosti antidotní léčby je důležité včasné rozpoznání otravy methanolem. Nejvíce případů otravy je požitím. Jsou také záznamy o otravě vdechnutím či absorpcí pokožkou na pracovišti. Smrtelná orální dávka pro člověka je 30 až 200 ml.
